I am delighted to say that for the eighth year running we will be running a programme of ‘Tours Through Time’ and a summary of the escorted history tours that have been planned can be seen on the Tours Through Time Programme 2010 page. Please feel free to request advance information if there are any specific cultural holidays or escorted tours that you would like to know more about. We’ll send them on to you as soon as possible.
Wherever possible our overnight history tours are based at historic hotels or hotels that are renowned for their service, location and their ability to look after ‘Tours Through Time’ travellers as independent hotel guests, rather than part of a group. You make your way to the hotel independently and most history tours usually commence with a welcome drink and introduction before dinner on the first night. This leaves you plenty of time to travel to the hotel, whether it be by car, rail or by coach. Hotel stays can be extended, subject to availability, to allow you the opportunity to explore the area independently, and we’ve got some really super places for you to stay in this year!
Our ever-popular Castle Tours of Northumbria is based at the atmospheric Otterburn Tower Hotel, a small independent hotel with its own fascinating history. It is built around an ancient Pele Tower, a fortified structure peculiar to the English/Scottish border region, and it features in contemporary accounts of the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. Included in the history tour cost is a free return coach transfer to Otterburn from Newcastle Railway Station.
If you have already experienced the above break why not return to The Otterburn Hotel and take part in our new programme which journeys north through the Northumbria National Park to discover “Border Castles and Abbeys”. There will also be a visit to the border market town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed and of course this tour is led by our popular historian Julian Humphrys.
From coastal fortresses to stylish houses, romantic ruins to impressive houses, the ‘Tours Through Time’ programme brings to life the history of each destination in incomparable style. Many of you have become regular followers of this programme and we look forward to seeing you again in 2010. We also look forward to welcoming those of you who will be joining this popular programme for the first time.
